Soldiers of the Dead

Missing image

Here lie the soldiers of the dead.
Forever restless in their eternal slumber
Raving in mental torment,
drowning in a quagmire of their darkest fears.
A stark reminder of a life of fallacy.

Resisting the final day of revelation,
haunted by sins yet to be atoned for.

Crying putrid tears
Releasing a reservoir of insidious emotions.
The church bells resound in morbid tones
Undulating through air heavy with malcontent,
diligent in its efforts to call forth judgement.

Dark undercurrents amass,
moving through the tombs like smoke.
Weighing down graves,
trapping the sins within to fester and rot,
in man made oubliettes
Belief now scattered upon lifeless earth,
creating a morass of defeated hope.

A myriad of opaque eyes watch from opened graves,
as the full moon sails across a cloudless sky
Calmed and resilient they return.

To the intrinsic consuming shadows,
to continue their silent vigilance.

The imagery is just so gripping I couldn't pull myself away. The tone of the poem weighed heavily as I read. I thought it gave a wonderful feeling of what the soldiers of the dead were all about. This is just astounding! And of course no... we can't forget

TK, this is good. I like where you took the word bank in relation to your pic which is wonderful. This is full of colorful imagery to tantalize the senses.

moving through the tombs like smoke.
    Weighing down graves,
trapping the sins within to fester and rot,
    in man made oubliettes

Loved this stanza and your perfect use of the word oubliettes.
