Never the Better; Just a Moth

You’re just a moth;
Who will never be
Sister to the butterfly
Or queen to the Bees.
(Never the better, just me.)

You’re just a moth;
Who hopes the firelight
Might paint what’s gray
In colors bright as day.
(Why aren't my patterns so flattering?)

You’re just a moth;
Who’s plain, without grace;
You weave in and out
Of bird-born air waves.
(My wings will never be so strong.)

You’re just a moth;
Who tries to dance
To the beat of your
Own wings.
(My song is not as sweet.)

You’re just a moth.
But it’s just a butterfly.
The queen’s just another bee.
You’re just a moth;
But that’s a thing of beauty.

Author notes

I saw a little fluttery thing in the yard, but I wasn't sure if it was a butterfly or a moth. So that's where this came from.

^-^ First poem in a whiiiile.

  • Such a cute write. :)

    I liked this one a lot! Typical Nephy to make an intellectual and awesome piece out of something as simple as a moth/butterfly. Great job my dear! Your poetry always grabs my attention Nephy, if only I could know you in person. You're absolutely amazing!

    I can gleen a few layers to this piece. Interpreting this as introspective poetry is one avenue, writing the self doubt of who you might be or who/what you are becoming. Less serious interpretations lean toward the whimsy and delight of your noted observations. Regardless, i sense wonderful creative visions of the world as seen through your remarkable eyes.

    I really like this poem. Probably one of the best I've seen!!

    Starts off quite depressive but at the end it all comes together, proves that you dont have to be better than anything but just you!

    "Under labels is poetry," said Kastor, and that's as beautiful as this poem is. I really enjoyed the first verse, especially the last line--never the better, just me. Wonderful.

    Great. Really, this is a common theme but I've never seen it conveyed this way. Or really, I haven't seen it taken off this well in such a unique way.
    Retain your novelty! I found it especially great that you managed to write this just after seeing some bug in your backyard.
    That's talent, for real.

    Keep writing!

    Elizabeth this poem is very cute. To see beauty and grace in all things whether they are pretty or plain as well as ugly is to truly see beauty first hand. I totally agree with kastor . I loved it. Keep up the good work.

    Love ya sis,

    It's fun to realize that there are more moths than butterflies, that there are more pretty bugs associated with the word than most know. It's fun to know that under labels there is poetry, that flash and pomp arent the prerequisites to your musings. When you say "beauty", it just is (exists) and (is) not trite.

    I'm happy that you posted this poem.
