Poets, Poetry, and Poems

Poetry is an extension of a poet
like a sword is to a swordsman
and poems are the slashes that are made.
They are the Z’s left by Zorro.

Poetry is fingers of the pianist
and poems are music that they make;
the tickling of ebony on ivory—
there in black and white,
ink on ruled writing sheets;
thoughts outside the box
spilled outside the lines
because they’re as unrestrained
as the poet’s heart.
There are no rules.

Poetry gives fists to the pugilist to pummel with
and poems are bruised lips and black-eyes.
They are the badges of battles.

Poetry is shadowboxing, swift movement;
the motion in Tai Chi, the beauty.
Poems are calm hearts and discipline.
They are sweat from released energy.

Poetry is the other woman, the mistress.
She’s gives digits to this monster
at the bus stop counting syllable like cookies.
She gives me sonnets, cinquains, and haikus.
She is the emotion behind ‘I love you.’
She completes me, poetry.
And poems are my babies.
They are the twinkles in my eye.
They give me joy.

    You've certainly used both hands to finger poetry. For me poetry is the "O" in Zorro ( not the Z) as the O is in continuum, full circle, a window forever open. Your poetry looks in, looks out, it is as busy as the proverbial bee, for indeed, poetry is a mistress who is found to touch anywhere and everywhere.

    Bravo.

    Wow. Great images right from the start. Zorro's Z is a favourite symbol of mine too.

    I liked the 'tickling' musicality of the next stanza, the 'no rules'
    and poems as the badges of battle

    I love the difference you keep pushing, between poetry and poems, and the way you've shown it here. (typo 2nd line of last stanza?)

    Thank you for writing a great entry for the contest.

    There is nothing I can think of that you have left out of this fulfilling work of who and what we are as poets. I already knew that you knew but it is good to see things written out in such a glorious fashion.

    BRAVO!

    Love You ♥

    Your set of definitions of what constitutes poetry is...poetry itself. Original, beautifully phrased - this will be hard to match, let alone beat.

    First-class work,

    Bill

    I see sexy is back in rotation...you can really keep those coming. I like the personal stamp you give poems and poetry and I really like the fact that you said poetry has no rules because so many even other poets would love to put you in a corner if they can.

      Thank you, sweets. It's a bit rushed. Wrote it just before quitting time. Anyway, how are you?
