she tried to blow the very essence
of your life away.
Evil is never more powerful
than goodness though,
and the sweetness of your life’s breath
still lingers in my air.
You are the love nestled
in the crook of my arms
where I cradled and nurtured my babies.
You are the softness that dwells
in my heart for the pain of another.
You are the truth when
I am tempted by the lies.
Everyday your loving spirit comes gently
and knocks upon my soul.
A reminder of your life,
a legacy of grace and tenderness left behind.
I am truly blessed,
for the sweetness
of your life’s breath
still lingers in my air.
Author notes
In Honor of my Mother who passed away from breast cancer when I was just 14 months old. She was just 29 years old, with four young children. My "stepmonster" entered the picture when I was two, and she did not allow us to have pictures of my mom or to talk about her. She was jealous of someone who was no longer here on this earth. She was also very abusive and cruel.

beautiful
Congrats on your bronze sweet lady
your words are truely beautiful with so much emotion woven into them.
Your dedication to your mum is beautiful and one only has to read it to know that your words come from deep within that beautiful heart of yours.
I know that your mum would be proud of who you are today, how you have turned the tables around, and brought much love and happiness to your life after having such a horrific childhood.
Your heart is as big as the heavens and filled with love and light.
I wish you well in your writing Patty and send you much love and happiness.
always your friend,
Anne.

This is a beautiful dedication to your mother. You did a wonderful job writing this and I'm sure she's proud of you, and watching over you. Also, I am sorry you have had to go through such things with your "stepmonster" as you put it. Thanks for entering and good luck in the contest.

What a beautiful expression of love you have created here, and of your own strength. It breaks my heart what you went through...you should have been cherished. But you more than survived. You have flourished in life, in love, and in your art. Bravo, my friend. Your mother is proud of you.
Love,
Camille

This is a most heartwarming piece that brought a tear to my eye. It spoke so much of your love and forever cherished feelings for your mother, bless her soul. To be blessed with such a loving parent who gives such that it is shared with the world is amazing. My father was the same. I love the emtional feel to this and how you really show that your mother is still with you despite her passing to the other world with the great spirit. just fantatic piece. I wish you the very best in the contest.

The poem makes so much more sense to me now, and holds even more weight. Life is such an unpredictable thing, isn't it? We never know how long we're going to get. All the more reason to live every moment with passion, as you obviously do. Thanks for your words about my mom-in-law. I loved her very much and miss her every day, but my pain is nothing compared to my wife's. I lost her, but I also lost my wife's happiness, which is my job. Right now, I don't know if it will ever come back as strong as it was before. Everything is redefined by a loss of this magnitude, it seems.
Take care,
Mark

I'm sorry you lost your mother. It sounds like you have the healthiest possible outlook on her passing, though.
It's a coincidence that I should read this tonight - the first poem I've read this week on AP, because my wife's mother died several months ago and I've been saying things like this to her, though not as eloquently. i.e., that her mother lives through her. She's been having a terribly hard time with it.
It may not matter but I wasn't sure who you were referring to in the first stanza. It didn't detract from the power of the poem, though. The last stanza really got me.

Thanks so much Mark. I am sorry to hear about your wife's mother passing. I lost my own mother when I was just 14 months old, and I have no memory of her but I feel her presence in my life strongly. She was pregnant with me when she developed breast cancer, and she passed away when she was just 29 years old. She left four young children behind. The first stanza speaks about my stepmother who was very cruel. Thanks for your support. It means a lot to me. My thoughts and prayers go out to your wife. Blessings, Patty
