There was a time when Briton was “Patriotic”
And red white and blue was all the rage
Many buildings flew our flag with pride
And our King was center stage
I often wonder what’s gone wrong with us
We won the war . . but lost the peace
Now Brussels is dominated by Germany
And Britain’s EU influence is the least
The French prefer Germany as their friend
Rather than the Allies that saved their neck
And we are no longer a “United Kingdom”
As devolution . . is making us a wreck
The Sterling Pound will soon be gone
And our laws will be made abroad
UK taxes are building roads overseas
And there seems very little to applaud
Our soldiers are fighting other people’s wars
As the rest of the world looks on
And we appear to blindly follow the USA
And I am left pondering what’s gone wrong.
Here our politicians are causing a brain drain
With their illogical policies and taxes
And our greedy MP’s formulate laws
That they themselves . . don’t practice
I feel it is time we resurrected “Patriotism”
And put our Flag in all our schools
Make the children aware of our Country
By singing our Anthem in assembly halls
We should encourage new British citizens
That have roots that are from abroad
To merge with their new adopted country
So we are united with one accord
We used to be proud to be British
Ingrained Patriotism was part of our creed
But political leadership is horribly lacking
And the main motivation today is . . greed
I’m a Granddad that finds himself daunted
With Global Warming, pollution and such
Yes - I worry for the young generation
But unfortunately I can’t do very much.

Hi,A good poem that says everthing thats going wrong with this country and what a lot of people are speaking about at the momment, the older generations must be so sad to see the way britain has declined,i for one will never give in to the stupidity of being carefull what i say, eg if i want to say black bag i will and not say reffuge bag, the other day i was speaking with our vicar, regarding hymns for my fatherinlaws funeral, i mentioned my favourite. {i vow to thee my country} but was told its insensitive now days, lets just say i spoke with some authority, A well put poem very meaningfull

A very powerful poem indeed. This is all true facts, yet you voice it with such dignity and very well structured. Share this to the world, and the word will spread on. Great work. =)

Sometimes I wish that we anglophiles who aren't British citizens would be helped to immigrate to the U.K. and those that hate it so would be, ahem, helped out.
I find it strange that winning the peace is so much harder than winning the war. The U.S. is muddling too, and apathy reigns. The obscene price of a university education now is undermining our culture. When my father was young it was not expensive: basically anyone who wanted to could go and become university educated, not ending up in hock for many years thereafter, hence destroying their will and passion to change the world for the better and build a family. I cannot believe that being rootless will help us all stand on our own two feet to fight things like global warming and pollution. To become a soulless homogenized world is defeating the whole idea of the richness of the human spirit.
I appreciate your poem and the view of Britain from within that it gives.
