Children of the War

Fire rose all around them
The ground split as the shells hit
Houses burst into flames
People fell
Blood soaked the ground
They ran
They ran as fast as their feet would carry them
They were young
Too young
Yet they had seen it all
One tumbled to the ground
A shell landed only yards away
Everyone stopped
They ran back
Grabbing her they lifted her up
She was bleeding
But there was no time

They saw a house
They started running towards it
In a blink of an eye the house was in flames
Some of them screamed
Holding each other’s hands tightly
They had to run for cover
They could be just running around any more

They ran into the jungle
Deep into it they ran
Thorns cut their feet
But still they ran
They came to a stop
As the shelling faded away in the distance
They huddled
Thankful to be together

They are not blood brother
They are not blood sisters
But they are brothers and sisters
They are children of the war
They are remnants of families that were once happy
They are remnants of villages that once thrived
They are all that is left
They are children of the war
