The Real Poetry

this morning
I rose before dawn

the harvest moon
hanging low in the western mist

and the sun not yet risen
cast a soft glow
over the curvature
of the eastern sky

there…
at the edge bare woods
a tall buck stood
motionless, pensive

and I
now outside the back door
step down
barefoot
onto the fallen colors

noticing
the way the amber leaves
seem to flutter
the way the crimson ones
seem to dance

very near by
a barn-owl calls
and I stand there
motionless, breathless

realizing
moments like this
compose the real poetry

Well done! And congrats on the gold. I am not personally a fan of free verse, but I got lost in your wonderful description here. You painted such a lovely picture and drew the perfect conclusion. I have felt this way so often myself. Congrats again.

This was an absolute joy to read. I am so glad that contests give me the opportunity to read so many beautiful moments and how they all are poetry. This is poetry and you nailed it. I always find it hard to leave a meaningful comment on a piece that I love since there really is nothing to change. There is nothing to be done to improve this and it is alive with the scene you recreated.

Thank you for entering this piece of yourself in this contest.

    Excellent

I found this poem quite outstanding. I love the way the beautiful pictures which it brings to one so vividly are expressed in so few words.

    SO BEAUTIFUL AND TRUE!!!!

This is the way I lived while growing up and always would I just stand quietly and listen and watch. Such beauty everyone should see and realize that this cannot be found anywhere except in nature and the world around them.

    Exactly!

That's it exactly, Marianne - moments like the one you describe are the stuff and substance of poetry, and certainly one of the pleasure of the autumn. The visual imagery is as sharp as a photograph - I could readily picture the scene. Excellent!
