Hatred Only Hurts When It's Directed At You

She laid there, vulnerable.
He spoke to her back.
He told her the list,
Of the things that she lacked.

Slight imperfections,
Usually naked to the eye.
He picked out each one,
And she started to cry.

All she could hear
Were words of pain,
All of the problems
He could not longer contain.

No compliments were said.
No good points at all.
Tallies of pain
Had covered the wall.

She feared he would leave.
The end was now here,
Losing her love,
Was the root of her fear.

And it seemed to be true,
As his words pressed on,
As much as she fought,
She listened along.

He said it would end,
If she didn't change.
Relief then followed,
But she still felt strange.

To be hated, it seemed,
She hadn't know before.
But the pain of the word,
Headed straight to the core.

Hated for things,
She usually kept hidden.
Letting them out,
Was always forbidden.

But she trusted his heart,
Believed in his word.
She thought he'd accept it,
But that thought was absurd.

She kept herself quiet
Even after he was done.
She didn't bother fighting.
She knew that he had won.

Change was in her future,
If she wanted to stay.
She'd hide all the problems,
That had pushed him away.
