Childhood Melody

We stared at our reflection,
hoping to capture the fleeting outline of dusk
and watched as a young koi circled around the crescent moon,
startling the dragonflies' courtship.

My hands cupped around a water lily,
and you reached clumsily for the frog that was disrupting
the sonata of the nightingales.

A tailwind led by the sparrows,
stole away the promise you whispered into my ears,
and the window curtains fluttered to a closure
as midsummer eve echoed one last note.

There's something fascinating about the reflection in water. I can almost see you two leaning, faces intent in looking into that pond. Wistful for a fading summer..that's how this makes me feel
