The Departure

The Departure
Did you ever see him go?
These words I asked one eve,
Just as Momma was heading out
To a juke joint I believe

Just as Momma was heading out,
She turned and looked at me
With surprise about her face
As I pleaded silently

But just before she left—
To a juke joint I believe,
Did you ever see him go?
These words I asked one eve

Just a moment did she pause
As a tear danced in her eye
As I pleaded silently—
Momma’s soul began to cry

And as a tear danced in her eye
Only these words did she say:
“Your daddy left me long ago
On a cold rainy winter’s day”

With surprise about her face
Momma turned and walked away,
We spoke again no more
Beyond that cold rainy winter’s day

For there she left me all alone,
As I pleaded silently,
To a juke joint I believe
When she turned away from me

And to this day that question lingers:
“Did you ever see him go?”
Only these words did she say:
“Your daddy left me long ago”

And long ago did Momma leave me
Disappeared into the night,
Off to that juke joint I believe
As home she left me to my plight

And of those words she spoke to me:
“Your daddy left me long ago”
In my mind I often wonder,
Did she ever see him go?

What did you think

Thank you so much dear for reading. Indeed, I've been doing this for about 16yrs of my life. Don't know where I get the muse from at times to concoct these whimsical and flagrant ideas of mines but it works. Thanks again.

Oh my!! I had to read this over twice, I hope it's not you.
A very clever poem and clever wording and very good rhyme, your flow takes us through to the last stanza without pause. I enjoyed it very much but hoped for a happier ending, but that's life!!

      Yes, unfortunately that is life....sigh
It's not about me--I completely made it up, but that's the most amazing thing about my muse; the darndest things come to me for inspiration at the times I least expect it. Glad you enjoyed it.
      Thanks for reading.
