before we grew up,
when nightmares were still scary, but not as frightening as the suspense of waiting for someone to find you in a game of hide and seek,
when we couldn't go to sleep without a goodnight kiss first,
when staying up late was eight-thirty,
when mummy and daddy still knew everything and nothing could go wrong while they were there,
and when boys still had icky germs,
you grabbed my hand and wouldn't let go.
love was palms touching and looking into your pretty brown eyes and playing grown-ups even though we were too scared to kiss on the cheek, let alone the lips.
but our hearts swelled with the beauty of knowing someone cared,
and that was simply enough.
before we grew up,
love didn't need to be anything more than
exactly
what
it
was.
