Just An Old Photograph

Just An Old Photograph

We were cleaning out the house

after grandmother died

she had lived there most of her life

everything was old and gone to

shades of grey

hurriedly we dumped out drawers

and boxes

no one would want the stuff she

had kept so many years

only the quilts and a few dishes

were worth anything

we would divide those things

she hadn't left a will or a list of what

to do with what

one of the kids took things from the wall

I heard something hit the trash can

and ask what had been thrown away

he picked up a picture and handed it to me

it was a picture of a young soldier

in dress uniform of the Army

on the back was a date 1945

Private Coleman Myers

" for my love" was written on the back

I sat down and cried for the first time

this was a picture of my grand daddy

it was much more than just a picture on the wall.

Author notes

My grandmother kept Army pictures of her boys on the wall

"and ask what had been thrown away" - ask should be asked

What beautiful sentiment is found in a photograph. You have found and been able to cherish a piece of your heritage. What better gift? This is heartwarming and wonderful. Thank you for such a lovely entry. Best of luck in the judging.

This is a very sad write.I can very much relate to it in a sense that nothing can move me to tears like photographs do. Funny but merely looking at photographs always give me an unexplainable hunger... and tears would just brim out. So don't wonder why I'm touched by this particular poetry piece =]

love how you ended it with this line:

"it was much more than just a picture on the wall."

I'm nodding in agreement. Pictures are more than just pictures. They hold a lot of fond memories that we will forever cherish...
