Waking day gives light to dusted ruins and powder that coats the lungs. The world is dry, water lines drop like heart rates among the rubble, she dreams of golden sunsets that do not leave her skin plastered with a sickly glow or sand that makes her skin raw.
“K~a~t~h~e~r~i~n~e”
She could swear the harsh, gritty wind rasps her name. Its voice like a betrayed lover choking on poison, and that’s what it might as well be, It whips at her with a vengeance as if to strip the skin from her very bones. And ducking, winding through the wreckage of a world that seems so long passed, she searches for anything to keep her going for one more day. Existence is dwindling; a mere puff of smoke stretching out, disappearing from the lips of a smoker into the thick night air. Predators lurk in the shadows, desperate, rabid with hunger, but so is she. The simplicity of just slipping away and giving up does not appeal to her, falling like so many others have, she will not claim defeat. Her heart aches to reach out, strengthen, thrive and conquer among this strange new way of life.
Hearts have one desire. To keep beating. And Katherine’s is no exception.
