Taken away.

There comes a promise

then the kiss

nine months shame

in loneliness.

The house of god

and all alone

the man of the house

was not at home.

A religiuos crime

I paid my price

I signed those papers

my sacrifice.

Went through my labour

without pain relief

because I was dirty

in their belief.

I saw her face

I smelled her skin

and her features so beautiful

my mind took in.

They took my baby

on that day

when at sixteen

I lost my way.

But I know her well

in my mind I see

the day my baby

will come back to me.

How can I be punished

when with God I share

the creation of new life

his gift i'm sure.

    Heartbreakingly Poignant...

Young Life can be so sad at times, and very unfair for many unwed mothers... Wishing you all the best in the contest...

Astounding...and of course with understanding and no judgement...we were all born into sin, we all sin, the only perfect man was Jesus, who bore all that God knew that we would do in a costly fashion. My daughter was one of those that almost gave up my grandson, now 4 years later that is not even remembered, she has another child with a steady boyfriend, they really do love each other but he has a step mom that keeps pounding on about my daughter and my relationship of the past, God wiped that away and here comes this Christian woman attacking and needs to realize she is playing in satan's fire, I love the Lord and that is that, but joy comes in knowing the advisary starts. Excellent write, should get well noticed. Blessings.

I thought this was beautifully written and the mother's plight tenderly portrayed. The use of rhyme is wonerful throughout-especially as you break it in the final stanza, which really drives home the final message. I agree that it seems paradoxical that those who claimed to be doing God's bidding were going against every natural law by taking the babies away from their mothers. Even sadder, some of these babies grew up unable to trace their natural mothers because records were destroyed or lost before the new laws were passed in the 70s. Thank you for you entry and best of luck in the contest.

Sadly this is what our societies have done to it's own shame. We have taken a group of loving caring women and told them they weren't worthy. When in fact they are! They need support, love and kindness, not shame and guilt.

    Well written Dolores.
