I saw you as the scales on the
underbelly of a fictional dragon;
a fire-breathing,
claw-scratching,
mirthless creature.
the kind where if I put my fingers
to its sides,
I would feel its ribcage and lungs
working together,
in synchronization and harmony.
the way it never really could
with anyone else.
but maybe if I stayed beneath this defense that could be used to hide or to be kept safe, maybe I’d come closer to finding where it kept its heart.
to be sure,
I never saw beyond that.
then,
I come to you:
the outside layer
formed to mold
to the dragon;
protection.
not that you had a choice,
or anything of that sort –
it’s just what you did.
you tolerated the heat,
and you were understanding
when it came time for the dragon
to discard the old scales.
I think if I were to tell you
all of this that I think,
you’d tell me,
‘there comes a time for everything.’
Author notes
The English word "dragon" derives from Greek δράκων (drakōn), "dragon, serpent of huge size, water-snake", which probably comes from the verb δρακεῖν (drakein) "to see clearly".
