God and Satan

God and Satan in limbo
Were having their usual chat
Which passed for an Annual Appraisal
When one began talk of a hat.

'It's a simple thing to do
If you really want to know
That they truly worship you
And not some other So-and-So!

Despite their reason, you can say
A scarf will demonstrate
Their faith, just as they pray;
So a trilby'll seal their fate'

'I'm not sure that I agree'
Countered the other with thought
'No, you never do, you see,
And that's just why we fought'

Author notes

Who is who?

I hope no-one is offended; it is light-hearted.

Inspired (very distantly) by a book by the famous French writer Anatole France, 'La Revolte des Anges' (the angels' rebellion) where he says 'La guerre engendre la guerre, et la victoire, la defaite. Dieu vainqueur devient Satan, et Satan vaincu devient Dieu'. Well, I haven't read it for 50 years so excuses if it's not quite right.

Trans: War engenders war, and victory, defeat. A conquering God becomes satan, and Satan, defeated, becomes God. For many years Anatole France was on the list of banned writers maintained by the Catholic Church, known as the Index. My Catholic teacher was kind enough to say that technically the Index had never been promulgated in England.

Tell me what you REALLY think!

I plan to revise this poem: please leave constructive criticism!

    Dah!

"War engenders war, and victory, defeat. A conquering God becomes satan, and Satan, defeated, becomes God."

The "Pit" and the "Pendulum" to barrow a title

Thank you. I realise I do not know the reference-- and must show my ignorance. What is the pendulum/pit thing?

I did really enjoy this little dissertation. The wonderful conversation between God and Satan, an interesting and entertaining thought. And what if, it actually does just come down to that.

      Dissertation!

I have another scenario in mind. I sometimes think maybe it is all true, but somehow, when my turn came, there would be some difficulty at the Pearly gates, because Peter was not on duty that day, and no-one was quite sure whose job it was, until, somehow, I was wangled in, only to find that you had to go and get kitted out in a special room where guys in boiler-suits would say they didn't actually have any wings in my size, unless, of course, I wanted to take an old battered pair, which did reaaly work properly....Oh well. Thanks for comment and clappies.

This is a very well thought out and original piece. Your fine grasp on talent really makes this a classic. I do not see how anyone can find it offensive. It is well crafted and a marvelous read.

      Why, thank you

I take it you have read some of the stuff below. It is quite difficult to defend a light-hearted joke. I have been struck with the fact that no-one of an open religious view has had anything to say; and yet this, of all things has attracted this little clique. I like to imagine they are adolescents of the most adolescent sort, but have an awful feeling they are grown men, who spend inordinate amounts of their time playing games of a childish sort.

It was nice of you to look and take the trouble to comment, and award clappies!

I like it. I wasn't offended at all. I think it is great to take a lighter stance from time to time. The whole seriousness of God and Satan can be a real drag!!! Thanks for sharing. Keep up the great work. Peace and light,
    Kendal

  • I love it! Agreeing to disagree, respectfully. At least at a point in time.

Excellent expression of both duality and commonality. Very impressed!

      Thank you, Ma'am!

And you did not even mention that my notes had turned into gobbledegook -now corrected. That is courtesy.
