Pass down the line, that which we hold
to be worthy of the rude limbo
which we call preservation
in the basement of our minds.
That which vintage hands have lifted
and fearing treasures lost
have placed in thought vaults
only opened by the key of affection.
'Remember this my son...'
is painted on the misty relics
of a vengeance long hard forged
from a kettle to a swordblade
and handed with religious zeal
down the ladder of the young
as they strive to reach the clouds
and pass it back to those below.
'There was a time when this was ours...'
the roadsigns that mark the homeward hearth
mutter the age old line, and recall
the greatest part of what is past
forgetting that which made it worth
the remembrance of the heart.
Pass down the line the petty proverbs,
and the fading household deeds,
and keep them in your treasure box
with the false pride they have built,
but while you sit and guard them
remember round your neck
the things that need no guarding
the things you've always known
that did not need the sayings
to make up their weight in gold.
When the vintage hands were working
to keep the grudges fresh
they passed on with more meaning
the things which gave them joy.

Sorry if you don't like free-verse. I have to confess this is more like prose.

I have to confess;
I love this.
I really value your traditional
stance on this prompt; you
brought so much insight
and depth forward.
I love the history
unfolding here;
a symbol of pure heritage.
Thanks for entering & best of luck

Vintage hands? I'm just imagining some dismembered hands wearing really old gloves...I don't think I'll write about those though I might got for something a little more metaphorical :-p good prompt.
