the sky had crashed.

there was always something bigger than us, that crept up when we covered our eyes playing hide and seek. we let it seep into our grandiose plans and infect them with a sense of perpetuity, and suddenly the notion of running away until our feet bled and our lungs ached seemed brilliant beyond belief.

and so you grabbed my hand
and in my mind
we ran.

we tip-toed across galaxies and danced with the moons and pretended
with all our might
that we meant something more than this.

all the while the hourglass turned upside down was slowly evaporating and even though I knew we couldn't last longer than the dark before dawn, I closed my eyes and laughed

because it simply didn't matter anymore.

we were the oxygen in the atmosphere
and the burning energy in the universe
that everyone else simply wishes they could be.

we were explosive and radical
and the same as all the other kids
who dreamed so big.

in the end, we played ring around the rosy in zero gravity, and when our lungs collapsed and our ribs shattered,

we all fell down.
