The chilly air had invoked
shivers, till the fire was stoked,
and mist that rose upon the air
reminded me of silent prayer.
The spitting of the new hewn pine,
the straggly stray did not decline.
and fare prepared so patiently
I knew that she would share with me.
I'd chosen Christmas in the hills
away from all the city's ills,
aloneness sometimes I prefer
although I fear some won't concur.
The snow fell in late afternoon,
which really was not opportune,
for I found that I had to stay
beyond the end of newyear's day.
Wind whistled through the garden fence
the drifting snow became intense,
and purring cat upon my knee
seemed to share my reverie
We stayed that Christmas, and beyond
till milder air cracked ice on pond,
You might ask how I fared for food,
I know these hills, their every mood.
So I had come here well prepared
for some I knew had been ensnared,
in a cloak of winter white
to never see the dawn's pale light.
Perhaps this year I'll go again
to where the hills meet field and fen,
just me and ageing feline friend
to see this year come to its end.

It sounds wonderful Master Blaster, to spend Christmas, just you and your feline friend, that would suit Heat and I to just spend some time alone in a snow covered cabin and watch the stars. Beautiful poem and good luck in the voting.

This is a beautiful holiday memory to revisit in a daydream. Snowstorms allow us to take the time to enjoy the solitude and blanket of quiet they provide. Nice you were well prepared and had a fur buddy to enjoy it with.
A lovely read.

Lovely, peaceful poem! A tribute to solitude's repose..sometimes, silence is the best sound you can hear (although a cracklin' fireplace adds a nice touch).

Best of Luck in this contest!

I enjoyed reading your poem very much Di, it sounds very quiet and tranquil where you and your cat goes. I hope you both get back there. Good luck in the voting.

There are times
when a cat is the best company of all. This poem has imagery which brings back many memories, and the tetrameter quatrains are rhythmic and allow the story to unfold by steps. I enjoyed reading so much that I begin to wish I had not so many obligations! Cheers, M

Dear Diana,
Your Christmas, despite the chilly imagery, must have been enjoyable after all for you to dream of going back. I love the clarity of your writing in this poem (even though it didn't conform with Rule 1) and the absence of any obscurity. YES ! Even I could understand it perfectly. Thankyou for entering it in this, our 50th. contest.
Best of luck in the voting.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

This is so lovely, I also love the solitude of a quiet place uninterupted by the world around me. I'm not so fortunate as to be able to do much of that anymore but I sure understand the wistfulness and beauty of such a reminiscence.
An exquisite poem and I wish you best of luck in the contest

Solitude can be very relaxing and enjoyable when it is from choice. I think many of us like to find a quiet spot where we can relax and recharge our batteries. For some though it isn't a choice and all their days are spent alone. Who wouldn't want to be snug in a cabin with a roaring log fire sufficient food and peace and tranquility. Maybe not at my age but you certainly make it sound enticing ..
good luck with the contest

This is extremely nice ...
and extremely well executed. I'm impressed.
Thanks for entering.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!
I cannot think of a better way to spend the holidays!
I pray I could do this myself, get away, far away from all the madness that is around us.

I love this so much I think I'll make myself a copy for the season and pin it up on my bulletin board!
