Lesson from Tolstoy

From womb to casket,
a downward spiral
from truth in life
to illusive misery.

Illusive is the life of man
so taken by instinct:
Building upon a firm will
to power and materials.

The life of happiness
he knew as a boy
is taught away
in ignorance,
and with trust,
      welcomely forgotten.

wow I want to know what book this is in response to (if it is). it's so short but you really do cover cradle to grave- the more irreversible trends of life.
