Recruiting the Dead

They honor them as heroes for the enemy they slay. They honor them with medals for actions immersed in shades of grey. For they are brought back to a world with feelings they can’t convey.

About the horrors they witnessed all while being force to obey. But as they return the disciplined solider is the image they’ll portray. And any humanity left within them soon starts to fray.

When they realize their trained for a war that’s built on dismay. But their back in a world where children are at play. For the lessons taught by their commanders will soon start to betray.

While the ones closest to them will most likely pay. For the fact that everything they once were is now decayed. But for the few who don’t let their humanity stray.

It’s for these soldiers that we should pray. Because when they finally lowered their guard their masters will call them away. And when their back in the line of fire they’ll realize they’ve been betrayed.

That they lived just to die another day.
