Malignant Sadness

It feels like you're drowning, fighting to breathe,
The strength to survive is all you want to achieve.
Each cut is only skin deep, the feeling won't last long,
But you have found relief and can continue to appear strong.
Trapped and alone, your only friend is the blade,
There is now no longer the need to be afraid.
The pain is rooted deep, the tears drip sore,
The anger and fear still remain at your core.
You want to escape and fly free like the birds,
But recovery takes time, or so you have heard.
Depression is an illness that can take over your life,
Leaving every day a constant fight.
You want to be happy and regain the "old you"
But first you must face your demons and work through.
A constant weight that lies heavy on your heart,
Keeping you and those who are special to you apart.
Real friends stay close and never leave your side,
True friends are those in which you can confide.
Malignant sadness can destroy all that you know,
But in many ways it can help you to grow,
Discover the strength to fight, the will to live,
There is nothing that you wouldnt give
To reach the surface and gasp the first breath of air,
Malignant sadness is something we must all share.
