Oh, for a mate who’d trade their love for mine
In mortal union all their life they’d bring;
A taste of sweetness causing heart to sing,
Of his passions deep I would drink like wine.
Alas and does my heart for true love pine,
A rapturous soul to which I could cling,
Of my loneliness would remove the sting.
No longer would I taste these tears of brine.
In hopeful stillness I will patient wait
On steadfast vigil through the starry night,
Not knowing when he shall enter my gate.
If Eros’ quiver to my heart was straight,
‘Tis Cupid’s arrow winging now in flight.
To know such tender love shall be my fate.

Beautiful
What a very touching write. The love flows in each line, And so masterful of use of the sonnet form. Best of luck in the contest

Well, for a first try at a sonnet - I'd say this is great! I've not tried many forms, so am impressed by those who seem to do them so effortlessly.

Like an era gone by
This sounds like an expression of heart of a romantic age gone by. It makes me long for hand-in-hand walks along garden paths bathed in moonlight and showered by the starlight of these poetic words. It is a pathway to love's dream. This poem is wistful, wishful, wonderful.

If this is a first attempt at a sonnet, then I'm impressed - you're definitely on the right lines!
Good one,
Bill
