Outcast

On the street longstriding it in the

crowds between stoplights out in the

open she looks so much taller than

in here following the maitre de to

her table for one where she must

make her choice turn away from the

pack hunch into a lower shadow drop

her head make it clear that she will

not try to join them threaten their

order or else brave it out face them

hold a steady smile gaze well above

their eyes drop to the menu and back

check watch twirl hair around finger

play with bangles on wrist swirl wine

in glass keep moving keep moving

now lean quickly at the door like she

expects her mate or friends to come

make more of her run this ancient

bluff while judging escape routes in

case she finally needs to flee.

Author notes

If our working vocabulary continues to shrink, perhaps
communications within our species will be reduced to noises
and gestures and our only ideas will relate to survival.
Instead of writing and reading poetry we will howl.

This has been altered, significantly I think. Trust that the folks who liked the original will agree I've strengthened the piece.

  • KEEN OBSERVATIONS!

RUCHIRA ADI DA TAUGHT HIS DISCIPLES THAT EVERYTHING IS "AVOIDANCE OF
    RELATIONSHIP!"

IN YOUR POEM "OUTCAST" YOU HAVE CAPTURED THE SENSE OF AVOIDANCE OF SELF AND AVOIDANCE OF OTHERS AND AVOIDANCE OF LIFE.

I HAVE FOUND YOUR OBSERVATIONS REALISTIC AND SAVVY.

"OUTCAST" DEMONSTRATES THE FEELING OF SEPARATION WE ALL FEEL.

    GRATITUDE AND LOYALTY

    STAY
    FOR EVER
    LIQUID

I get this - I enjoy my time alone but sometimes it can engulf a person. You're good at capturing moments, you know? In a sense of bringing a person right into them. I can see myself, twirling my hair and, actually, gulping my wine

Enjoyable as ever and impressively precise

Have you been following me? lol. I know this feeling, this outsider who refuses to be beaten down, but sometimes the waves of pity (do they dare?) or compassion (what would they know?) become overwhelming, and yes, fleeing is the only option.

I recognise the ploys, the glances at the door as if expecting someone, the fiddling...

    Ouch.
