Remember Remember

Missing image
In 1605 thirteen men plotted to blow up our seat of power
Stored in the cellars gunpowder ready for the allotted hour
But the plot reached the ears of the king
An anonymous letter, someone had started to sing

They were betrayed by one of their own
And felt the full wrath of Englands throne
To this day we burn the effigy of Guy Fawkes
The most notorious of the 13 men caught

Chant of ‘penny for the guy’, childhood games
Macabre almost pagan as he’s tossed into the flames
As we stand around watching , toffee apples to bite
As the fireworks start to light up the night

The smell of chestnuts roasting, and potatoes in jackets
Sparklers, bangers , Katherine wheels all cost a packet
But its worth the money for every bang whiz and pop
As the enchanted faces of children wish it never to stop

Smoke hangs in the air as the fires burn bright
And a myriad of colours shoot into the November night
But if you think about it it’s really quite ironic
Because our most famous traitor has become iconic

Would it be a bad thing if he’d completed his raid ?
I think maybe it would have been better I’m afraid
And a modern day Guy Fawkes is what we need

Remember Remember the 5th of November
Gunpowder , treason & plot

I for one cant wait !

Good one. My Aunt used to talk about Guy Fawkes Night, but I don't recall all of this, maybe I wasn't listening. Interesting.

What imagery you have casted in this write. Kinda like our fourth of July here, although we didn't create a holiday based on a criminal...lol..., but maybe we should as we seem to have plenty of them in the White House...lol...I for one would like to see Burn Congress Day, or Catapult OBama month...lol... Oh yeah Egg the Senate week...WOW these would make for great holidays...lol...I'll probably get a visit from the Secret Service now because of the proposed holidays. What the heck do they call themselves the Secret Service for anyway there's nothing secret about them.

    Wow....

..... What a write, quite playful about a serious subject, and then to call for another to come and finish the job I all I can say is Scandalous... might be on a Terrorism Watchlist after this poem. Of course by me remarking I might be added also. I wonder if such a holiday would go over well in America ... "Eric Robert Rudolph Day" Hmmm wonder how that would go. I am out near where ole Eric is being stowed away for four life terms maybe I should head down and ask him eh?
