The Insect Party

Mr. Moth is playing the piano
singing a lullaby and drinking galliano.

Mosquito comes through in a frightening whirl
making Mr. Moths hair curl.

Pretty pink cockroach is clapping with laughter
baby ant is swinging on the rafter.

Grasshopper sleeps through with a snore to shake the room
as stunt weevil disappears preparing a jump with the broom.

Sally slater bug is painting her nails
while naughty buzzy bee is teasing the snails.

Sargent wasp brings the room to a stand still
his girlfriend molly millipede sitting on the window sill
she tries to stop his ground shaking voice
so all the little bugs don't die without choice.

They don't choose for us to step on them
or spray them or swat them.
Their life is short anyway
go on leave them be to go and play.

Loved it. Not unlike Froggie going a'courtin', where the guests come in, a bumbly-bee, a flying moth, a big black tick. Just a kids' song, maybe, but it contains enough about our own mortality, and our own frailness, for Bob Dylan to record it, of all people. I love the way you put it in 'hope' for it's full of love. Opening lines are the best. But then I adore moths, and I think most of my poems have them in, somewhere. Lullaby and Galliano .... marvellous.

this is cute. As much as I hate bugs, I do appreciate them and admire their intricasies.
My mother is a staunch believer in never killing anything...you never know "who" you may find living at her house. It is a family joke at this point. Hmmm...that sounded odd...she isn't "dirty" by any means, she just loves all living beings.
Great write, keep up the good work.

This is a cute write. I like how the end explains that the insects have a short life anyway, so we should just let them have some fun. Interesting thought I'll try to remember next time I get bit by a no-see-um! (sand gnat - makes an awful welt that itches like crazy.)
