The Darkness and the Deep

In the Beginning
There was darkness
An empty formless world
Shadow cloaked
A shimmering diaphanous moth, the Spirit
Wings across the waters
Dances on the lips of the deep
The void that will become a world
A Voice speaks out
The Word
And a universe is born

Two Millennium pass
Mankind is bound in evil
The darkness that his world
Was birthed from
Has corrupted his heart
The Creator drowns the planet
A great wave
Breaks the path of the moon
Floods the earth

An iron king, heartless and vile
Rails against his Maker
Rivers run red
His greatest treasure
Harvested
As death's angel passes
In the night

A people follow a column of fire
Burning in the twilit sky
Upholds the stars
Trapped between the
Darkness and the sea
Until a pathway opens
Through the deep

A beggar, blind since the day
His milky eyes met sunlight,
Crouches on the roadside
The great Teacher approaches
Spit, mud, salve, sight
Brings clay into his eyes
Tears away the night

A ship is shattered
As fangs of wind and water
Wrench hope from
The chests of its crew
A hand raised from sleep
A Voice speaks out
The Word
And the storm and seas subside

A fool steps upon the waves
Follows his Master
Forgets his sight
And sinks into the deep
Until a savior's hand
Cuts through shadows
Bringing life

A man, a god, a hero
Hangs between heaven and earth
Impaled upon a crucifix
Cries in death's wild agony
Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani
Drops his head without an answer
Breathes his last
And darkness falls

A beast rises from the waves
Abomination of the Heavens
Bringing the world
To its knees
A river flowing upward
Higher than its life-spring
Cannot be

A curse, a final damnation
Is breathed on the sons of perdition
Who are cast into
The outer darkness
With their god

A Kingdom descends
Alights upon earth
And behold the night
Has disappeared
For the Maker abides
On a planet remade and renamed
So too, the sea has vanished
For He at last has banished
The darkness and the deep

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters...
