Daughter (for my mother)

I do not know just who she is,
This girl I see today.
I think I know just who she was,
But why is she away?

Today when I looked in on her,
Another girl was there:
She looks the same—blue eyes, pale skin,
And curly red-gold hair.

Because I know the other well,
I know this one’s not she.
Her face and voice may be the same,
But who could this girl be?

The other is so well-behaved,
Respectful, sweet, and kind.
What has ensued, to make her leave
This girl for me to find?

This girl is so disorderly,
And never will behave.
She’s nothing like my child—this one
Will drive me to my grave.

I wish the other would return
And send this one away.
Everything’s so miserable
Since she was here today.

Author notes

This poem is for my mother, who has dealt with that "other girl" so many times and still loves me despite it.
