Deaths Cold Embrace

The only promise that is never broken,
is our untimely death.
Seems it has always been watching us
waiting for our last breath.
It has been said that god is our shepherd,
and he shall lead us to green pastures,
where we shall dine in the house of the lord...
Why dost he send to me a reaper?

Should I trust this wraith?
Do I have enough faith?

Oh immortal incarnation of death,
who comes for you when you die?
Or are you free from this process?
Death answers not to anyone,
he just takes what is rightfully his.
With deaths embrace he pulls my life's plug,
strangely it feels a lot like a mothers hug.

Author notes

4) I have been told to thank the Lord for all that He will send,
But if death should come to meet me - Must I greet him as a friend?

    very deep.

    "Death answers not to anyone,

    this was my favorite part.
I have thought about this before. like we should be thanking death for all that he does. It muxt be very tough job, killing all the children, the young men, and old women. I would not have the heart. luckily he does. Is this what you are getting at?

I think I summed up my thoughts in this piece the most with the last few lines. Many people fear death/dieing, even though it is something none of us can avoid. Personally, I kind of look forward to it, like the previous comment says, returning back to the quiet and solace of peaceful nothingness. The Grim Reaper is an image of death, horror, meant to insight fear by those who look upon him. Funny it is how this specter wraps us in the embrace of death, which I'd like to think, will be the warmest hug any of us will ever have, for with it, will come the answers to all those questions we could not answer in life.

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment

well written! i loved this poem. mortality will always be a topic of discussion for everyone from authors to poets and everyone in between, and this poem is a breath of fresh air. i really liked the last line, and the kind of return to the beginning that death brings; a kind of return to the nothingness we had before we were born.
    thanks for sharing this
