A sultry august night,
when barley moon waxing gibbous
swung her orbit to the vault of stars.
No breath of breeze to bring respite
from torrid nights and burning days;
and ice that clinked an hour ago
now silent rivulets on my glass.
Then movement caught my half closed eyes
and there beneath gnarled apple tree,
a badger sniffed the heavy air
then continued, his search for roots.
The sweltering heat was forgotten,
I watched him for an hour or more,
for a visit of this nature
is as rare as summer snow.

I'm sorry MB but it is almost as if you are trying too hard.

This is a great one, Di. God knows why you weren't rated higher than an HM because it's really good. I love it, too.

Congratulations ...

This is a lovely poem...quite a nice image here that does capture a profound moment of nature. I like this a lot, thanks for entering.

A magical encounter indeed. Some of your lines are beautiful and really bring the poem to vivid life. The only line that appears (to this reader, at least) awkward is "I wondered if he was aware of my presence there." Apart from that, a wondrous poem.
Best of luck in the contest,
Bill

This is a wonderful read Di, I didn't expect this type of poem when I came here but I love the original imagery.
