the course of marriage

i.

i pick up the round open mouths
of empty plates and wash them out
with soap. as if the chocolate cake crumbs
around their ceramic lips
was a sin in need of penance.

you sit there on the couch,
as if it were a pew,
praising football players
and listening to the weeping
of running water from the kitchen.

ii.

we picked strawberries
on trails that led to rock beaches
and silent stretching skies.
our hands empty, except
for the stain of scarlet,
seeping into our palms.
after splitting the seeds
with our teeth,
we sowed into each other’s orifices.
gardeners, constantly
harvesting.

iii.

i decided we needed a plastic mattress
protector. not for wetting,
but for guilt free whipped cream.
we slid and stuck
to the plastic, heat and cream
covering your cupping hands.

i rinsed the protector
like a dirty condom,
except at night
with the lawn sprinkler.

iv.

we once were chocolate,
ice, and cherries.
addicted to spooning
into each other
and savoring every spoon
full. but now,

we are empty plates.
with only scarlet stained palms
and a plastic mattress
protector, to prove
our beginning.
