The Child in the Dark

As pitch black Ravens circle the old well,
pale bony fingers twirl teeth between the knuckles.
Her breath stinks of earth and worms,
her eyes are small blackened pearls-
gleaming beneath the moonlight.

'Make a wish, oh pray tell thy desire-
feed me with curiosity,
and I shall come higher.
I hunger for the fruit on thy bones,
make a wish-
pay me with your moans'
her voice echoes through the hills and creeps into cradles with sleeping infants.
Her rows of sharp teeth gnaw on rocks and mud as she tries to still her hunger.

Her bony body breathes not as she crawls out of the pit-
staggering and jolting towards the scent of a new born child.
She moves like twigs entwined with webs of lust,
she scurries over the hills while screeching awfully for blood.

On the horizon, she spots her prey-
fragile little Billy was left yonder the window sill.
The cradle snatcher grabs her snack and drags him to her pit of darkness.
The screams were heard, far and wide, as the child of darkness consumed poor Billy's meat.

Snorting and grunting as her nails dig into flesh,
she uses his pinky to pick her teeth.
As soon as the parents wake up in the morn,
poor Billy is gone and in the cradle- a note awaits them:

'Follow the moon to the pit of hell,
it's where thy can say thy last farewell.
Thy child was deliscious and I would love some more-
but dear humans,
in the future-
be careful what you wish for...'

Author notes

I used picture number 2, (the one with the bloody child that says 'hi friend') as inspiration. I am on a cellphone and can't paste the link here, sorry.

First: "I hunger for the fruit on thy bones" & then: "child of darkness consumed poor Billy's meat." Super-uber inventive you've heard 'Strange Fruit' by (Billy Holiday)???? Wonderment if I am, better would I be. Lol no matter, great work!

Definately creepy and disturbing. This could be the basis for one creepy horror movie. Your imagery is so perfect I could see every scene playing out. From the girl peeking out of the well... to her crawling for the boy... I could even picture the cradle sitting on the window sill with the baby sleeping soundly. I think what really adds to this are the quotes you have her speaking. I pictured a soft spoken almost sing-song voice raspy with the decay of death chanting the words... that made it just that much creepier
    Good luck in the contest!

  • Oh Wow

I already have a slight fear of wishing wells! Congratulations! You are one of the very few who have done as I Wanted and scared me. I must say the beginning is what did it. The ending made me look over my shoulder. Delicious write!

It takes ALOT to creep me out but you have thoroughly succeeded here...not just with the gore factor but as a grim fairy tale full of ghoulish monsters that eat little babies...I think you could successfully scare the hoo hoo out of little kids with this bedtime story....it would probably do wonders for discipline too...lol...a really GFREAT piece!!!!
