Evacuation

A Community hall
like a bullring really,
we were crammed into the centre
with brothers and sisters
                                            waiting

All around the townsfolk crowd
                                            incredulous
eyeing us bundled up, one case each,
gasmasks and backpacks.
                                              silent
In twos and threes
the others are chosen and walk away
to a new home.
                                              bewildered

At last one boy and one girl
and two adult couples stand
                                              still staring
one couple choose the boy
                                              crying
Two old, grey people
walk me to their house
                                              reluctantly.

This seems to me to be an evocation of the feelings of those children who were evacuated from London to safer homes in the country during the blitz. Most of those children, I believe, survived and were returned to their families afterwards.
How different from the children of Jewish families in Nazi-occupied countries who were 'evacuated' to ghettos or transported to concentration camps from which few survived.
Your unusually formatted poem recalls what, for many, will be lasting memories.
I applaud the stark imagery of your writing.
    Love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

That sounds horrible. Nice way of expressing yourself, though. Few people have that way with words.

    SAD AND TERRIBLE TIMES!!!

Your deeply touching words here bring to my mind two scenes. One from the movie Chronicles Of Narnia, and the other from the movie Secret Garden. Those times must have been terrifying for the children and the adults had to dig deep into their hearts and make some tough choices on whether to take on the responsibility of children in their lives at a time like that. I try to imagine in my mind what it must have been like.

      Hallo my friend
Thank you again for your interest and comments. I've been off line a bit this week and am only just picking up on messages. Am off to Oxford all next week and will then be back most of the time until the New Year. Talk again soon.
