~Savored~

Outside the wind sighs

and the trees moan questions

that will never be answered.

They are my

friends,  bickering like an old

married couple.

I have not forgotten,

what it feels like to hold a child close,

to smell the scent of newness

It reminds me of  fall days.

~and of comfort.

I take in the night like a

warm blanket as it edges towards

morning, because sleep doesn’t

welcome me yet.

we think we go unnoticed,

even the Birds perched cautionary,

flees as it seeks a place of shelter.

Tonight,

the clarity of my life sings

songs of melodies like the soft breath

of a baby’s when it breathes.

for once I want to sit still

and just be.…

I take in all of life’s uncertainties,

and grow from that very soil

that tried to bury me.

Life is not a race to be won,

to be scattered about like the leaves

in the fall, but to be wholly,

~Savored.

  • Yeah this is really nice. Some of the images set the mood perfectly for this bit of introspection. It has a mysterious feel to it, haunted maybe, and rightly so for the depth that it explores. It become a completely hopeful and inspirational piece, full of beauty.

    ~SIGH~

Poems such as this deserve our undivided attention. It is insightful that it was a featured work. Congratulations!

These days we are so busy rushing to go nowhere fast that we forget to take the much needed time to “just sit and be…”. Your words of introspection are healing. They soothe the stressed mind and awaken the senses. Everything about this poem is pacifying. Your use of “the baby” as a metaphor is suitable for the calm your words offer.

I need some time like this soon. I plan to capture it as soon as possible. Beautiful! I am savoring this moment that I have right now.

    BRAVO!

    Much Love Always ♥

    A winged-back chair, a beer and a cigar

    Rend,

Yes, I read your "Savored" during a busy day of work yesterday. I immediately enjoyed it, but I went back to work and left my impressions on a back burner to simmer. It resets the stage of last Sunday evening sitting on a forest green winged-back chair in my back yard with a Newcastle brown ale, and a Rocky Patel robusto my brother in law brought in exchange for a beer and companionship. A few hours reflecting, bounded by the time it takes two guys to smoke two cigars, drink six beers and solve our world's problems or at least reach a truce with them. That same wind and questioning tree are in my backyard too and they dialogued as your friends did while a storm front approached from the southwest and stuffed the sky with cotton. We neither held children, but we talked about our wives, our relationships, and felt the comfort of a friendship that has outlasted every other we've had. There is a clarity that appears, an unhurried quiet, an accounting under a retreating sun in your own backyard, in your own little black book. At first, you steep like a teapot all the boiling uncertainties and adversities, but then you contain them, they subside, you realize you're stronger, and I like to say, you soak, or as you put it, savor. The alarm will go off in the morning, the race will recommence and chaos will scatter our leaf pile like little children in the coming week, but the savory memory will remain where we stored it. A nice piece, Rend.

P.S. The stanza beginning with Tonight is as beautiful as the rest, however I would suggest abbreviating your line, "...like the soft breath of a baby's when it breathes" to read, "...like a baby's soft breath".

    very good poem

This poem speaks of mother nature and the changes made within a life. It seems the winds and trees have a voice which is also bringing the poem to a spiritual road, to a road of possibility and goodness, My feeling here is searching perfections of a wish that age stops past reminds us running the reminisce of the here and now and looking back in time. Think in the poem you are creating a sacred space. I hope you don’t mind my comments on this as the hidden words tell a story. Thank you..

As I read this anew I find it just as much a treat to be savored as one would sprinkle olive oil on ciabatta bread and feel the roots stretching from the old places they use to call home.

Rend, your poem here feels like a moment of introspection of the reality of the day and age we live in, life has become a race to the finish and end to consumption is the ultimate goal.

I loved where your poem took me even on this second ride.

The last stanza,("Life is not a race to be run, to be scattered about like leaves in the Fall, but wholly, savored")Is beautiful. We live our life in a whirlwind, and scatter ourselves minute by minute like autumn leaves caught up in the wind. Just as the leaf has it's uncertain journey so does our lives. I think this is one of my all time favorite poems. I really enjoyed your flow and choice of words. It`s funny I clicked on this, I just liked the title, but I had just gotten done writing something very similar in subject. Maybe thats why I liked it so much? It fit almost exactly how I was feeling tonight. Only yours was much more beautifully written, you are a very good writer and I wish you the best of luck in your contest! First of all, love how the title becomes the perfect ending, lost amonst such beautiful words... Love your structure with the oversized text/beginnings?... You do it in a way that is right and perfect within the whole... The first stanza "trapped" me with its perfect subtle rhyme and feeling divine... And, the rest flowed sublime.... Only thing to look at is:
    "we think we go unnoticed,
    even the Birds perched cautionary,
flees as it seeks a place of shelter. "

    Only awkward point I see...

    I loved this!!!
Thanks for sharing and best of luck in the contest!!!

    ~~ Outside the wind sighs
    and the trees moan questions
that will never be answere~~~ That opening is a poem in itself. I love the imagery in that.

    ~~I have not forgotten,
what it feels like to hold a child close,
to smell the scent of newness
It reminds me of fall days. ~~ ~ This is more beautiful than a full moon. I love to smell babies. and to hold them is such a blessing.

Your imagery, personification, and presentation is impeccable.
On a scale of 1-10 this is a steady 100.

I liked this alot. Its rare for me to read a poem online and to actually feel like im reading from a book. The formatting was fantastic. As far as the poem itself I can only dream of being half as good as this. I especially like the argument stanza. It immediately got my attention and let me know what I was in for. The positive light at the end was a nice touch. Its rare to find people who are able to find comfort in the darkness but know that we truly live when we embrace the light. hope that makes sense.
