Wutzitsname?

Missing image

(Blaze and her pet human, your's truly)

I was raised on a farm, so I was always charmed
by the names given to critters.
Be they big ones or small, I have owned nearly all,
barkers, neigh’ers, moo’ers, twitters.
But one thing I have seen, there is a common theme
in how animals get addressed.
We lack imag'nation and for demonstration,
my own pets might illustrate best.

My first mongrel you see, was very, very wee,
and so “Tiny” she soon became.
Then along came “Ole Blue”, and you know that it’s true,
he was the color of his name.
My next dog was quite young, when home she was brung,
so logic'ly I called her “Pup”.
Looking back at these names, they may seem a bit strange,
but they were all I could think up.

Now for horses we had, there was “Black” rode by dad,
which correctly described her coat.
The little sorrel horse, we all called “Red” of course,
her temper like a billy goat.
My own buckskin mare, for any who might care,
was lovingly christened “Old Buck”.
So it shouldn’t surprise, when next we baptized
that black/white striped cat as “Bad Luck”.

Seldom we'd name the cows, they don’t come anyhow,
so our breath we would not waste.
Though there were a few, that we had named too,
but none were in very good taste.
“That Ol' Crotchetty Bitch”, with her evil tail twitch,
who when milked would fly-swat your face,
and then who could ignore, “That Miserable Whore”,
who tried to run me off the place.

So when choosing a name, it becomes fairly plain,
that we looked for obvious traits.
Appearance, attitude, they could be nice or rude,
but I can quite honestly state,
there was rhyme and reason, for names of my pleasing,
except, so help me Lord,
I can never explain, the strange choice in my name,
for the budgie that I called "George".

This makes me wonder what you might name your children, ha! I enjoyed this and it gives some insight to your personality. You're a sweet man.

Rhyme is strained in a lot of places. This is a fun subject but still rough in its expression. Sometime you have to keep reworking the rhyme.

I liked the poem. I can remember a time, when it was hard to find a good name for a critter. But somehow, we all find a good name, that somehow just fits that critter to a T. Just like a bunny, I once had, we named him Fred. LOL. For some reason, he just looked like a Fred. My daughter didn't complain, about his name. She even thought he was one. LOL. How is it, we just find the darnest names for our pet critters? But love them all the same, no matter what we call them. Thanks for sharing. Take care and have a great day.

I enjoyed this one, Rory - nothing demanding, just an amusing and gently affectionate poem.

    Nice one,

I like the name George - that's the name of my basset hound Once again, you have charmed and delighted me with your poetry. Have you ever written a rhyme/tale about a saloon girl up to no good? If anyone can write great western stories in rhyme it's you, and I think I just put in a request Have a great weekend, Rory...L

Good one, Rory. Just keep in mind this fine old adage: when considering getting a pet, remember that a dog thinks you're family and a cat thinks you're staff. I have no idea what the cows think, though. Never asked one.

Well, big boy, I enjoyed every word. You have structured lines and stanzas, and fun rhyme and meter. The story is entertaining, what more could one ask for. The names may or may not be for real, but they fit the bill. Love it. I have eight dogs and naming them has been much different than your way , although I did have a dog named Spot once --guess why. My latest Kid (this kid rocks). A great read.

Thanks Fiona. All the above names were real, though we probably had several dozen "That Miserable Whore" when it came to the cattle.

come to think of it, I probably had a few "George's" as well....I never could figure out how George could be a blue budgie one day, and green the next...
