A Monarch of the skies.
He fluttered gaily round my head
in black and orange masquarade,
then with his fellows turned and fled
enroute to western skies.
How does he know which way to go
to reach a distant mountainside
across the continental divide
in far off Mexico?
What awesome power directs his way
and guides his flight unerringly
and in the road that I must tread
will that same power guide me?

Every fall, a magical event takes place - the annual monarch butterfly migration to Mexico. By instinct alone, the butterflies return to the same mountains that their ancestors left the previous spring. Somehow, they find a place in Mexico that they've never seen before. from www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/monarch/

Perhaps the writing -though good enough-- is not what even the writer would have wished. But how do you describe, and highlight, this kind of natural wonder, and won't the writing always fall short?
Buterflies present an interesting problem for those of us who take evolution as read, and who also assume that we perceive things as being beautiful for a reason. But where would butterflies fit into that? Did humans once follow them, for food?

Thanks for the read and thoughtful comment! I think in nature writing we always fall short of the mark, in that our creation is always pitiable compared to that which inspired it. I too have wondered what evolutionary pressure could be responsible for the brilliant beauty of butterflies.

Hiya EZ,
I've never seen the migration, living on the east coast. Monarchs are less common here than Black Swallowtails, although we do see a few. But how do they keep that map in those little heads!?
Thanks, my Brother!

This makes me smile Bruce
I expect that someone somewhere will give you a lengthy explanation based on no end of research and profound knowledge in this field but to be perfectly honest I would rather stand in awe of nature at its most beautiful and thank God for sprinkling His magic
Sometimes we don't need answers
I have never had the privilige to see this but your poem gives me a wonderful image
Thanks dear friend

Hi Cherry!
In this case I don't think anyone knows how the migration takes place! We know something about how salmon find their natal streams (chemical composition of water) and how birds migrate (some steer by constellations). I think know the answer doesn't detract from the miracle!
Thanks for your wonderful comment dear!

Bruce
