Of kites and colour change

Today I watched the turning of the trees
With red kites soaring high across the skies
Magnificently sailing on the breeze
And keeping all of England in their eyes

I listened to the rustle of the leaves
And heard the pretty calling of the kites
The touch of gold an autumn tree receives
Is truly one of nature's great delights

The turning leaves are measures of the year
Returning kites are measures of our age
The beauty we once massacred through fear
Returns to take its place on centre stage

How do we seem to kites above the town
When autumn trees are slowly turning brown

    Boffo!

Particularly love line 5 - thrilling expression of place both vertical and horizontal.

What a beautiful poem to a beautiful bird! He truly is magnificent! I love the line "And keeping all of England in their eyes". I love the parallelism in lines 9-10.

This is afterall my fav season of them all! Jeff you have captured the brillance of Autumn as well as touching the significance it holds to life and time passing! All of England must mirror where I live here in Michigan, USA?

I love the image and motion that you have managed to obtain in this sonnet. Line three is correct but if I was to rewrite it I would say: "Magnificent they sail upon the breeze". "Magnificently" just seems to be a mouthfull for me and dampens the flow. Line 13 makes no sense what so ever to me. Still, I love this poem and I love you.

PS. When I click on the link in the poem, I get this:

I'll look again at line 3, I have fixed (I hope) the audio link.

      Hmmm
Line 13 seems right to me, the kites (there's now a picture of one above) patrol above High Wickham where I was working, they follow cars down roads and appear to be contemplating us much of the time. They are carrion feeders and I guess the best place to find a dead animal is roadkill
