Taking Action

Missing image
Many a time I have stood by your side,
pasting on a mock contented smile,
as it seems you make every decision
regarding décor in our happy home.

With abundant patience throughout
each crackpot purchase of yours
I have maintained my silent composure;
resisting each urge that I have to
wrap my hands ‘round your neck
squeezing, screaming, “Why me? Why?!”

Every plastic molded figure in its
neatly formed package you display
on the wall as a symbol of pride.
With no space left to hang my fine art;
I find myself finally at my wits end.

I have begged and I’ve pleaded as
you defiantly grin, beaming at
your collections as you ignore my pain.
This agony must be what the poor camel felt
as that final straw was placed atop his back.

It is time my dear I take my stand as
my face burns in fury while at last I shout,
“The wretched dolls go, or else I’m out!”

Quote Prompt: “Either the curtains go or I do.” – Famous last words of Oscar Wilde

So, I was sitting on my sofa trying to figure out just what I wanted to write inspired by the quote I chose when I looked up and saw the action figures my fiancé has displayed on our living room wall… still in their packaging because that increases the collector value of course… now this poem isn’t my personal opinion, because I think his action figures are pretty cool. Anyway, when I looked up at them I was just hit with the idea for this, and I thought now what would I be thinking if I couldn’t stand the fact that he collects these. Then, I had to call them “dolls” in the poem because I like telling him they’re dolls just to hear him shout, “They’re action figures!”

    First off-they are dolls. They were dolls when I played with them as a youth-they still are. Exactly how much action does a figure get when it is protected by a plastic barrier. Other sorts of barriers I can understand...um...maybe that does sound how it means.
    Oscar Wilde-a more important figure than he is given credit for.
    As far as putting them on display, to each their own....we all have our little quirks. This brings to mind the "discussions" my "most recent ex wife" and I used to have over her tacky detection not being turned on when she bought home decor. I tend towards "dark" art-she tended towards "precious moments".
    One thing that the Action Doll Figures are not, is art. As many have been told-get a room.
    Peace.

  • Hehe. I am sooo glad I read this. I enjoy torturing tony about his "dolls" as well. "They're action figures!!!" lmao.

    CA this is a really cool take on the prompt. To watch a woman tear her hair out over her mans doll collection, oops (action figures) while she herself has not one inch of wall space for her own art collection. And the ultimatum at the end is a perfect way too underscore his frivolity and lack of social graces towards his wifes wants and needs. Got a few chuckles from this, based on the dolls alone. hehehe. Well done.
