Of this life I am finished

a lone flower,
discontented with its roots-
the earthbound chains acquisitively
staying fast its form-
looks up to the sky,
nonentity of nothingness,
and cries:

"Of this life I am finished
and finished it is with me."

a little humming bird
wonders why it should love its wings?
They come with only work,
only unending torment and exhaustion.
a humming bird will die when
the wings stop beating, they say.
Landing on the branch of yew,
letting its aching heart rest,
the humming birds sings loud:

"Of this life I am finished
and finished it is with me."

an old woman,
sitting in an antiquated chapel,
gazes upon a wooden crucifix
with love and jubilation.
there, sitting above her head
smiling down upon her
was her salvation, her Everlasting King.

He uplifted her roots
He gave wings to her heart
and thus proclaimed:

"Of this life you are finished
but now by your faith a new one begins.
Sing unto God a new song
for through Him your Kingdom has come."

Author notes

I haven't been the best Christian lately. I wasn't even planning on this poem being religious, but the last stanza started writing itself, and then I looked at what I wrote and started to cry. I don't think about it often, but He truly is righteous and good, and His Word is indeed good news.

Moments like these are the reason I'm a Christian. It fill me with joy when I think about what awaits me after this life.

Thank you for reading.

Your wording is gorgeous, as usual. You summon such meloncholy with "nonentity of nothingness," and "letting its aching heart rest," and then uplift the entire poem with your final spiritual thoughts. This is breathtaking. Great job!
