Wide eyes
Dry and bright
Wide with fear
Bright with wonder
She breathes in ash
Air filled with dead carbon
Fills the space between her fingers
And whistles through her hair
She doesn't blink
Who could look away when the world is burning?
Her town so familiar
Is visited by an intruding stranger
She cannot stop it
Nor can she look away
The sky
A black-orange bruise
Is coming towards her
Like ink it reaches across her town
And drowns the world
In endless flames
So she stands
with her eyes wide
and watches
San Diego burn
