why do we say vermin
to explain rats
when we mean politicians
too afraid to be
or stipulate
be excommunicated
or a non voter
which by the way
can be preferable to death

i spoke to a stranger,
now he is not
and i wonder
if he had the choice
would he have wasted an hour
or driven the LA freeway
frustrated
without conversation

tomorrow
i will be more learned
a student of dreams
in awake periods
and numbness in sleep
and for those who don't care
i will listen to Tom Waits
understanding his drunkenness is a ploy
to fool the majority
and in the minority
will be me
