For Thomas Chatterton ... 17 years of Eternity
what am i -
here in the arms of rejection
with the nameless and the shameless
- the poor souls who slept
sodded by the sun
with night's veil of survival
what am i -
slave to the freezing opium of poetry
my lone companion of illusion
shivering this cold passion
this blotted blanket of blackness
what am i -
reaching for the Heart's warmth
but finding no fingers
to grasp feeling's freedom
what am i -
having no eyes for tears i cry
neither lips to be curved
by lamentation
what am i -
minstrel to the haunted and the fatherless
but with no tongue to tremble
the call of my inherited incarnation
what am i -
the murderer of my father's son
with no condolence for the death
brought on by own dementia
what am i -
a soul dying without its body?
no: a soul
indemnified
by Love
