I jogged myself lost.
the town was mud-pushed
up on the sides of the streets,
clogging the curbs and sidewalks so the stroller
had to seek an alternative route
a canadian goose stretched her wings
over water
threw her neck forward and leaped
onto the grass right up next to you,
heavy hands hanging.
you smelled like the beginning of spring
right as the snow is melting
you turned to me and spoke all goose flesh
wriggling about your jaw people never change,
never truly not the muscle
in their flesh the muscle wedged deep
between their knuckles,
instead they grow layers and that's all
that's all that's but I wasn't listening
and neither were you
you have always been too far away to hear
Author notes
I bet you couldn't be true to yourself
not with me
not if you tried.
