And lace them up
Throw on our jackets
And zip them up
We march
To the beat of the drum
Our hearts pounding
The same old tune
One by one
Left, right, left
Halt!
Stand attention!
We are ready to serve
A pointless war
Is there ever
An at ease to it?
Author notes
Something I wrote at work. I was listening to the radio and they were just talking about the war in Iraq. This is what came to mind and it made me think back to my years in Cadets.
I have never served in a war and I can honestly say I am glad I didn't. I don't think I could handle the pain that comes with it.
For those who have, I salute you and you're in my heart.

Hmmm....
..... Well I can say (Without serving but having had many family members in the military) that there really never is an at ease while at times of war. At ease in times of war will get you killed. My uncle was "At Ease" riding a bus in Vietnam when a bomb blew the bus in half he was one of only three survivors that made it out alive from the bus. All happened to be on the back bench of the bus. I would take many years and a few bouts with Cancer to finally achieve what the bomb didn't Even when he returned home from Vietnam he never really was "At Ease" So remember that when our boys come home from their current conflict and be sensitive to it!

I personally couldn't handle the discipline of the armed forces and am totally against violence but i do admire what the army/navy/airforce do. My Grandfather operated a tank in the second world war and was a complete hero.
Good poem. J.

Thank you very much Jacob!
There are many heroes in times of war and in life in general. I am glad to hear your Grandfather was one

Megan,
To take the time to jot down your feelings, showes that you are a good poet. I served in war, and I appreciate you writing this. Our troops deserve to be written about.
I salute you.

Thanks Joe!
Although a simple poem simply isn't enough to show appreciation for our troops!
But to know they are thought of I hope is comforting too!
