Today I was a bird.
The windows were down and the music was so low that the words became part of the wind. I closed my eyes with my foot on the gas and I was up there -
Blue, like no other color but the sky, opened my throat and I could chirp and ripple. The air felt good under my feathers, hitting the downy areas.
And I could look down to the almost yellow and orange and see apple cider trees begging for me to nest.
But no - the clouds called me to soar, soar higher into this place and never
touch land.
I must have had a death wish, for my small, avian heart hoped that when I opened my eyes,
I would be wrapped around a telephone pole.

Author notes
I closed my eyes for a split-second while driving today. Probably a bad idea, but holy hell, it was one of the best feelings ever.

That momentary exposure to danger
was worth its weight in gold,
producing a brilliant poem like this.
Me, I get no better feeling,
than standing in an empty street
late at night, with my arms stretched wide.
Just daring somebody to hit me,
so I know that feeling well
This absobloodylutely brilliant!
My best,
Zach Estel
