Ode to The Gambler

In a not to far away land, a time not so long ago
a gambler was dealt a hand that held more than he would know
with all his heart what he perceived a sure thing
only proved the start of his greatest suffering

Every card turned seemed to fall into place
inside he burned though nothing shown on his face
this he had perfected and it had gained him much
that his feelings were never detected gave him the midas touch
This was his creed, this was his belief
whenever in need here he found his relief
but then, there are games and then there is life
and where one only shames the other cuts like a knife
So, here ill-met, he began his lengthy procession
learning, on some things you can't bet, but too late came the confession
Far from calculating and cunning it began so simple
but oh, it proved so stunning, the eyes...the smile...the dimple
He would need a new technique, this he knew
his fascination beginning to pique the nearer she drew
Never before had he been affected this way
too hard to ignore, the gambler made his play
Come heaven or hell he would win this hand
he would spot her "tell", the cards his to command
Soon, his mind was eased, for he achieved this conquest
and he was more than pleased for she filled an aching in his chest
this void he would realize had always been within
lost in her eyes, he saw a new life would begin
he would drop the charade sheltering him with his devotion
for her, a serenade...for her...emotion
But he came to find as he had not yet
when you bet the blind...it can be an unfortunate regret
Deeming time was short he began to surmise
he would have to resort to bluffing and lies
feeling utterly invincible he would ante his all
victory fiegned convincible then the chips began to fall
In the end, he was left broken and spent, only himself to blame
on winning he'd always been bent, but, love is more than a game
A hard lesson learned, and this the gambler passes to you
even the deepest love will be spurned, if not dealt, always, honest and true

  • I have never embraced gambling, and your poem gives me even more reasons why. A draw of the dice, a turn of the card. You can only be a high roller for so long, and then...all of a sudden, Lady Luck turns her back on you and everything becomes a downward spiral. This guy seemed very conceited and arrogant in the beginning, and by the end he was humbled by his losses. This somewhat reminds me of certain family members I have.

I think this could benefit from a few line breaks, but otherwise, it is a good poem.

    Many blessings,
