Come with Me

We had sat so long at those dead desks,
Squirming silently under the teacher’s stern gaze,
Watching the clock tick away our childhoods.
The stiff dirty windows unsealed at last,
Open to the bright air of a late spring morning.
The door to the playground standing ajar,
The pale sunlight pouring into that dusty room,
Where we were bent, heads lowered in long rows.
He wandered in silently, a stray mongrel dog,
Hair rough and matted, but eyes bright and glad.
He looked at me, then turned quickly, running,
Leading me, his head up, I followed with my heart,
His path over the concrete, between the empty swings,
And back over the happy stream to the far free fields.
Was it really that long ago? No, surely not.
The decades have flown, to warmer lands perhaps.
My hair turned grey, a once quick heart weakened.
Schoolyard games replaced by frequent funerals.
Those bright eyes turned to warm earth far away.
And today I sit silent in this windowless cube,
But still the dog beckons, and today I will follow.

    Beautiful

Wow, all I can say is wow...

simply because I just learned of the passing of two friends today and I am filled with memories and how life is just so fleeting. Not only should we follow that dog, but run alongside him with our tongues hanging out so that we can taste the wind and feel the sky on our faces.

You poem is beautiful and poignant.

    Very Well Done.
