For CarolDesjarlais

She has drifted near the shoreline-

she has known the surge of sea -

she struggled against a mighty wind

to set her spirit free.

She has fed her many children

while she has had to go without -

she assures them that she loves them -

of this, there is no doubt.

She has held sorrowed hands in silence,

understanding the depths of pain -

she spoke to them encouraging words

when their skies were filled with rain.

Somehow, she keeps moving on,

no matter how hard it's been -

she keeps her warmth inside your heart

so you'll know you have a friend.

She's fierce when babes are threatened

and will always be around -

when she speaks, then you'll be sure

that there's an angel on the ground.

She tends to those who need her

with a strength that is inspired -

when she's called upon to serve,

you'll never know she's tired.

She sees the best in all of us

and refuses to give in -

she makes me proud to know her,

to consider her as kin.

She shows us how to live with heart -

she knows just what we need -
she teaches with such gentleness,

in every touch and deed.

She gets her name from this awesome bird,

for her strength lies in her wing.

She'll lift you up to heavens above,

where there's room for you to sing.

I don't usually write in rhyme, but this song inspired this piece.

Eagle When She Flies

by Dolly Parton

She's been there, God knows, she's been there
She has seen and done it all
She's a woman, she know how to
Dish it out or take it all
Her heart's as soft as feathers
Still she weathers stormy skies
And she's a sparrow when she's broken
But she's an eagle when she flies

A kaleidoscope of colors
You can toss her around and round
You can keep her in you vision
But you'll never keep her down
She's a lover, she's a mother
She's a friend and she's a wife
And she's a sparrow when she's broken
But she's an eagle when she flies

Gentle as the sweet magnolia
Strong as steel, her faith and pride
She's an everlasting shoulder
She's the leaning post of life
She hurts deep and when she weeps
She's just as fragile as a child
And she's a sparrow when she's broken
But she's an eagle when she flies

She's a sparrow when she's broken
But she's an eagle when she flies
Oh, bless her, Lord
She's an eagle when she flies

i know you don't really feel that comfortable with your rhyming and you know i don't really care for cowbells and the like, but this is a good poem, i think. i see carol was very happy with it, at any rate.

Thank you for your kind words, Sam I Am. Of course, you can use the lyrics; I agree, people should read them, too. I'm glad my poem sent you to Carol's page. She has always inspired me, in so many ways. Thank you for hosting this contest.

This poem makes me think of my sister when she lost her twelve year old son to a brain tumor. She was--

"She's fierce when babes are threatened
    and will always be around
when she speaks, then you'll be sure
that there's an angel on the ground."

She was so strong and so was he.

I am moved. Thank you Wanda.
