The Chocolate-Starved Artist's Lament

No Hershey's, Nestle's, M and M's for me!
I crave the chocolates that spell romance.
The sort more sensual than a swirling dance
In silken velvets, elegant and free.
Those sumptuous luxuries, that majesty,
These sweets that drug you in a swooning trance,
The Pots-de-Creme, the Mousse, that stuff from France:
Patisseries all far across the sea!

Or give me nothing: nothing can compare.
If I'm too much in pain, my friend, you'll find
Some flower or any pretty scrap you've got,
Perhaps a pithy quote both wise and rare.
A Ghirardelli I.V. would be kind,
Till then I'll draw realms with my chalk a lot.

Aha! Now my computer's letting me comment! Thank you! The problem with some poems is that they're fattening.

Oh, I can relate! My friend Joyce has written several "chocolate themed" poems! But M and M's or Reeses cups are okay by me, though I confess I love for "real" chocolate covered cherries.

Love the Ghirardelli I.V., though I'd rather taste the drip than have it course through my veins ...

I could argue that when you're truly a chocoholic, even your veins have taste buds, but you might disagree.

I love the splendor of fine chocolate! The whole ambiance it wraps you in. When life has been so horrible and tawdry and tragic, for one moment it transports me to the dream of feeling loved as a woman for being a woman. It makes me feel like I'm all made out of velvet roses inside, and loved till the end of time.

And then I hug my cats and kiss their noses.

A nice Petrarchan sonnet on a sweet subject. The meter is quite good and the rhymes are great. I also like the volta in this sonnet.

    Well done!

You take good care of yourself! Eat plenty of chocolate! Who knows! Maybe it's the cure for more than just a broken heart? Hugs

hahaha, this is charmingly humorous. Love the title. Ah, and this is a Petrarchan Sonnet, no less! My admiration just increased a notch! And blast it, now you've got me in the mood for some gourmet sweets. ~Keys

Thank you so very dearly: If verses themselves are sweets, I think of your verse, I hope you don't mind, as some of the sweets from Keats' St. Agnes Eve:
      " a heap
Of candied apple, quince, and plum, and gourd,
With jellies soother than the creamy curd,
      And lucent syrups, tinct with cinnamon;
Manna and dates, in argosy transferred
From Fez; and spic-ed dainties, every one
From Silken Samarkand to cedared Lebanon."

What with chocolate, I can understand why people would kill for it, and die for it.

Thank you for the read and the wonderful comment!

    Dear Purrs,

A fine Italian style sonnet extolling the excellences of imported French chocolate luxuries versus the "common stuff". i must confess though, that ANY chocolate will always engender gratitude and satisfaction as far as I am concerned. I am not choosy.
Thanks for this splendid and beautifully written entry which deserves a good response in the voting. Best of luck.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

    Cute!

and very nice sonnet form too. I like the Belgian chocolates, though French and Swiss will also turn my head. You are right to spurn North American brands. Smiles and Chuckles too. Best of luck!

    Dear Purr

I enjoyed your poem though it spoke of pain (I loved the pun). If I had three wishes..one would be to end all pain (the other two would be for CHOCOLATE).

They say you can't miss what you never had (and I've never had an expensive piece of chocolate in my life). Since I've never experienced the really good stuff, I'm content with Hershey's dark chocolate made in Hershey, Pennsylvania (I even toured the factory where they make the chocolate when I was just a kid...'cause PA's where I've always lived).

BEST OF LUCK in this contest!

    Healing hugs,
    ♥ Maureen

P.S.: I also must deal with a lot of pain. I'm thankful for any kind of distraction (when I'm up to it). The internet (especially AP and the huguenauties) has been a life saver for me.

I'm thankful for any distraction too! AP has also been a life saver for me, besides the huguenauties.

I should be ashamed for myself: I now live in Pennsylvania.

Some chocolates are just more ... well, chocolate than others and your favorites here are unsurpassed. Not that I indulge in chocolate of any form... nooooo... not I. Oh hell, I never was a good liar. Just suffice to say, there's nothing more satisfying than a good old fashioned chocolate binge, even the mediocre ones will do in a pinch

    Good luck in the contest

    How simply delicious this is!

and a what a fine chocolate poem you produced for this contest! I like that dark, semi-sweet chocolate from Switzerland or any dark with nuts or caramel. Nice to read your poetical thoughts of this tasty subject. jy

    Sadly I cannot eat chocolates

However I can read and enjoy sonnets about them

If I do ever succumb and eat some it will always be Cadbury's Dairy Milk. Hershey's is horrid, nasty and burnt tasting. And the expensive "high quality" chocolates are nasty and bitter, but CDM is mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (not Cadbury's sold in NA that is made by Hersheys and is disgusting!!!)

    Chocolate deprivation
has no effect on your wit
    and your sense of luxury,
as you have created a wildly
    clever "chalk a lot" piece!!!

    Kudos, Purrsanthema!

I can't remember when I was last given a box of chocolates in fact I don't associate them with romance more mothers day and Easter (neither of which I celebrate)

It took me a while to get the pun chalk a lot but I got there in the end

    good luck in the contest

Chalk a lot! It took a moment for the pun to register. It was the slightly off meter that drew my attention to it. Very clever. I LOVE chocolate!!!

Despite the fact I'm currently in the form of an M&M for this contest I have to agree. European chocolate reigns superior to me.

Wonderful velvet verse Purrsanthema and best of luck in the contest.

Thank you dearly pixiestix! I'm sure that if you were really an M and M you'd have a heart of pure glorious European Chocolatey bliss! As it is, you "only" have elegant taste and a far superior form! Thank you so much for the read and the comment! This is a frustrating competition. Working on my own poem, and reading all of the others, I've almost hit the cooking chocolate thrice, and I don't have time today for baking!

Thank you so much for stopping by, and the read! The one thing that I miss so much from "home" is the chocolaterie there: yep in Evanston, Illinois. Piron Chocolates: so much. just as elegant, fresher than Godiva, and so sumptuous they're to die for! Yep, he apprenticed in Europe.
