spent all my time looking for you, or at least something I can pretend is you;
searching tirelessly, perhaps foolishly. I have not met you yet.
upon quiet reflection, while frost steals over the windows and the seams of my skin, I've come to realize -
I may not know who you are, but I know who you are not.
i.
you're not the girl with the voice that cuts clear across any room, who refuses to wear matching shoes. who would announce fear of commitment with a kind of pride; but we both know now that wasn't what she was afraid of.
ii.
you're not the girl with the combat boots and the laugh of a child, who would evade me in every sense and only apologized when I gave up. who was this close to me and who I let slip through my fingers.
iii.
and perhaps mercifully, you're not the girl with the infected heart and the hair that could stop traffic, the boyfriend that doesn't treat her like she deserves. who was tangible, and who I did have in my arms for fleeting seconds, the one I tried to cling to in fragments and still keeps tendrils of me in her hand from when she tore away.
iv.
you could, though, you could be the one with the hit & run on her lips and the foreign country behind her eyes - the one I'm afraid to traverse, whose language I'm nervous to learn for fear of getting lost in its streets and forgetting my native tongue.

or maybe they could be the boy with the untamable hair, who never owned a wristwatch, therefore never knew when the time was right or wrong, who's mind poured out through his eyes and sent nuclear love missiles to the hearts of seven clumsy women, enough to give him a moment of their time.
maybe, just maybe. -

I may not know who you are, but I know who you are not.
- a statement like this opens up so many possibilities. so strong and poignant.
and perhaps mercifully, you're not the girl with the infected heart and the hair that could stop traffic, the boyfriend that doesn't treat her like she deserves.
- in each section you paint such a detailed picture in so few words. i think these have got to be my favourite lines.
